After a conversation with a couple of young people I know very well, it occurred to me that it's ripe time for a firm reminder. And I figured I am qualified to craft this message to young people because to someone somewhere I am still considered a young people. Also, after working with and around young people for 12 of the last 20 years, I think I know a little about where they are, where they are going, and what they need. OHSU Unveils New Diversity Wall
In 1957, Oregon Dental School graduate Clarence Pruitt was refused space in Portland's Medical Arts Building simply because he was Black. Around the same time, civil engineer Jean Richardson, had to work for free, until she convinced her employer that a woman could do the job. Seattle Summer Food Programs for Kids Get $225,000 Boost from Walmart
Thousands of children in the greater Seattle area are learning that there is such a thing as a free lunch, thanks to the city's Summer Food Service Program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this year's program was augmented with an additional $225,000 grant from Walmart. Z-Man Basketball Tournament and Service Day This Weekend
The Annual Z-Man Basketball Tournament and Day of Re-Tilling the Soil, Saturday July 16, is dedicated to longtime Portland-area coach and teacher Phillip Walden. Organizer Larry Collins said Walden, who is currently battling cancer, has dedicated his life to working with young people, particularly in track and field.
