PSU’s Archaeology Roadshow Highlights Travel and Trade in Pacific NW

Celebrate the archaeology of the Pacific Northwest at Portland State University’s Archaeology Roadshow, an open-air event introducing the public to local heritage and the science of archaeology in a fun, hands-on way. The event is free and open to the public.

“The Roadshow is a great way for people of all ages to meet real archaeologists and others that are working hard to protect and share our heritage,” said PSU Anthropology Professor Virginia L. Butler. “We’re also thrilled to be taking the Roadshow ‘on the road’ this year — out to Harney County on June 10.”

This year’s theme, “Travel and Trade,” is designed to get visitors thinking about the universal importance of connections through time and between communities.

Activities include:

Third graders from SW Charter School are hosting an exhibit that highlights canoe travel.
A special exhibit from the Maritime Archaeological Society will feature a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) that visitors (including kids) will be able to pilot around a pool to discover objects.
And once again, visitors will be able to sample craft beer from an historic recipe, made by a Portland area brewery.

In addition, a panel of experts in archaeology and geology will be on hand to identify the personal artifacts visitors bring. Stone, bone, woven, plant and historical items are welcome. Please do not bring live plants or animals. No appraisals will be given; the Archaeology Roadshow does not authenticate or value items for sale.

Nearly 800 people attended last year’s Roadshow, organized by Portland State University’s Anthropology Department, with help from over 100 volunteers, students and community partners.
