At the recent National Newspaper Publishers’ Association’s national convention held in Houston, Tex., The Skanner News took second place for Best Editorial. Titled “New Opportunity in the Marijuana Industry,” the editorial, by publisher Bernie Foster, was published July 15, 2015. NNPA, an organization that includes 200 African-American-owned newspapers, is considered the “voice of Black America.”  The Merit Awards are sponsored by the NNPA Foundation, and are judged by nationally known journalists, editors, university professors and communications experts.

President of NNPA, Denise Rolark, publisher of the Washington Informer, said that member publications are improving their brands and utilizing social media platforms to maximize audience and revenue streams.  Al McFarlane, foundation president and publisher of Insight News, Minneapolis, Minn. , praised publications for challenging content and graphics.
