Portland Parks & Recreation invites proposals for future tenants of the former Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, Inc., building, which is soon to close because of financial difficulties.
Beginning April 8, PP&R will post information online at www.portlandparks.org on the selection process and criteria for a future tenant of the City's historic former firehouse, located at 5340 North Interstate Avenue.
"We want to move quickly to find a new tenant and limit any closure of the firehouse building," notes Lisa Turpel, PP&R's workforce and community alliance manager. "Our goal is to minimize the impact on the community by ensuring a wide range of arts programs continue, especially for youth."
PP&R is committed to continue providing the facility to a tenant who best fits the selection criteria.
The following are the primary criteria established for any potential future tenant:
1) Provides multicultural arts programming, showcasing diverse artists and offering arts programming of interest to Portland's diverse communities
2) Commitment to the communities of North and Northeast Portland
3) A proven track record of financial stability and community engagement
Deadline for submissions will be ten business days after the information is posted online. A tour of the facility for prospective tenants will be scheduled in mid-April. The building currently consists of a small dance studio, two art galleries, a 100+ seat theater, and small kitchen area, all of which are ADA accessible. An elevator services the ground and second floor only.
PP&R hopes to recommend a future tenant to Portland's City Council before Summer 2010.
