Forgive African Debt

More than 60 percent of Africans live on less than one U.S. dollar every day. Over hundreds of years the African people have suffered many problems, from slavery and apartheid to AIDS to crushing debt.

More than 60 percent of Africans live on less than one U.S. dollar every day. Over hundreds of years the African people have suffered many problems, from slavery and apartheid to AIDS to crushing debt.

For all the problems imposed on Africa by Europe and the Americas, we should relieve their debt as a way of consolation.

AIDS has ravaged the continent, killing over 2 million people every year. With almost 26 million infected people, Africa has the most AIDS patients in the world.

As poverty has ravaged the continent, most citizens cannot afford to buy medication for many diseases like malaria and AIDS. Many people don't even have enough money to buy food.

We hope that the G8 countries make the right decision in relieving the African countries of their debt. We hope they realize that there are more important things than money.

Recruiters Violate Privacy

I am writing to voice my concern about military recruiting in our public schools. While I support the troops and the rights of a volunteer military, I do not support institutionalizing involuntary recruitment practices.

The No Child Left Behind Act automatically gives the military the right to take any student's private information without any form of parental permission or notification. This snooping into students' private school information needs to stop.
There is an opt-out provision in the legislation, but rarely are students or parents informed of it. I encourage students and parents all over our state to send a letter to their schools' administrators asking them to keep their information private.
