Now that Northeast and North Portland are primarily White, it is curious to see the rationalizations used by Whites to justify their insensitivity to taking over another's culture and traditions.
One such example is the Florida Room owner's comment ("Clash of Cultures" April 11) that while she tries "to be sensitive to the history of the community," she "can't guarantee that" her sign won't "offend someone else."
Because we as Whites are mostly unconscious of how the expression of White domination and privilege is seen by others, the idea of simply stopping what she was doing and deferring to a portion of the Black community's wishes on this issue is probably extremely foreign.
If she had, then she truly would be being sensitive, instead of just saying the words.
