Funeral services were held Aug. 31 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church for Racquiya Cashe Nins. Racquiya Cashe Nins (Kiya) was born March 13, 1997 in Portland, OR to Tiffany M. Nins and Melford Smith Jr. She was the second born, and the only girl of Tiffany and Melford's three children.
Although she was a daddy's girl, she was also very close to her mother as well, especially since they were the only two women in the household.
Racquiya attended Woodland and Rosa Parks elementary schools, as well as George Middle School. She was an honorary member of God 'N Charge Ministries, a community based, non-profit organization that uses the arts to spread the word and love of God.
She also co-founded Theta Nu Psi, a new sorority designed to keep young girls positive.
A very mature and well-spoken young lady, Racquiya was a very active member of her community. She was a happy person and she loved people, especially babies and young children. Although she was so young, she spread a lot of love. She loved bright colors. Racquiya loved to make people laugh, and always tried to lift the spirits of any troubled person that she came across. Because of this, people loved to be in her presence. Racquiya also enjoyed singing, dancing, and she would probably tell you "just being happy".
Racquiya Cashe Nins was called home on August 23, 2009. She will be missed by many people, but she will never, ever be forgotten. Racquiya is survived by her mother and father Tiffany M. Nins and Melford Smith Jr.; her two brothers Casey Smith and Tariq Nins; her grandparents Berta King, Yollanda Nins-Johnson, and Daniel Johnson; her aunts Andrea D. Edwards, Arrianna Moody, Regina Clardy, Monica Nins, and Demetria Nins; her uncles Jeffrey Smith, Gregory Knight Jr., Eric Clardy, and Derrone Nins; and her godparents, Chris and Lenora Hall; as well as the many family members and friends, who loved her so. She will be joining her grandfathers Leslie Albert Nins and Melford Smith Sr. Like them she will be gone in the flesh, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of the many people who loved her.
