The Portland Q Center will be holding a dialogue session about finding identity among a diverse city. The discussion, "The Juggling Act: How Do We Live All of Our Humanity?" is part of the ongoing "Face2Face" series of community dialogues.
The dialogue will be conducted from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12 at the Q Center, 4115 N. Mississippi Ave. in Portland.
"Portland is a city of multi-hyphenate lifestyles: Most people know, for example, an actress/nanny/barista who wears several "hats" at different times of the day. But what if this multiplicity is more intimate than a professional calling: How do we wear multiple cultural identities? We are finding common ground based on our sexual orientation or gender identity; now, let's add the experience we have of age, class, race, ability and many other facets of ourselves.
The next meeting of Face2Face will delve into how these multiple cultural identities intersect, interact and are in friction with one another. For example, if I am both a sexual and racial minority, where do I find community? If I am young lesbian, do I feel more at home among other lesbians or among other youth? If I am a differently abled, trans-identified person, how do I prioritize these different aspects of my life? Regardless of where we fit into this diverse spectrum, please join us for another compelling conversation at Q Center."
