Thousands of adults, teens and clergy met in Orlando, Florida last week at the National Black Catholic Congress XII. Opening the conference was Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, of Nigeria, appointed by Pope Francis as First Prefect of the New Dicastery for Promoting Integal Human Development. Many Black U.S. bishops, sisters and priests were in attendance. A large contingency of teenagers attended separate workshops to address their concerns. Bishop John Ricard of Pensacola-Tallahassee worked with a group of parishioners from across the country in the five-year planning process for the congress.
