Enjoy Cookies with Cookie Monster, and learn more about Sesame Street's new initiative to help grieving children and their families, Thursday, April 15 at Oaks Park Pavilion
Preschoolers and their parents are invited to join Sesame Street's Cookie Monster for free cookies and activities, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cookie Monster will make half-hour appearances at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by The Dougy Center for Grieving Children, OPB and Sesame Street.
The event introduces a new initiative from Sesame Street called, "When Families Grieve" to help families with children who have experienced a death of a parent. Free "When Families Grieve" resource kits, including DVDs featuring Elmo, will be available.
The kits provide families with age-appropriate tools to support and comfort children who have experienced the death of a parent or loved one.
A television special also titled "When Families Grieve," hosted by Katie Couric, will air on OPB Thursday, April 15 at 9 p.m. An estimated 1 in 20 children in the U.S. under the age of 15 experience the death of one or both parents. For more information, visit www.sesamestreet.org/grief .
The Dougy Center for Grieving Children, based in Portland, provides caring support in a safe place where children, teens, young adults and their families grieving a death can share their experiences.
