As any full-time caregiver knows, the strain and effort of caring for another human being's every need can be exhausting. But a day of relaxation is in store for caregivers to take time for themselves and learn some techniques for caring for themselves and their care receivers.
The fourth annual Caregiver Day of Rest and Relaxation is set for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at St. Phillip Neri Church, 2408 S.E. 16th Ave. This free conference offers relaxation techniques, gardening, art and creative activities, as well as self-care skills and tools for coping with the stress of caring for the chronically ill.
Keynote speaker Ann McQueen will offer tips on using humor as a stress reliever for caregivers. Lunch will be provided.
Free respite care will be offered to participants by the Volunteers of America Oregon Adult Day Services and Home Helpers. Respite care gives caregivers time to rest and take a break from their duties while ensuring the ones they care for are safe and secure.
To receive free respite care, participants must register with VOA or Home Helpers at least one full week in advance. For families caring for children, respite care will be paid for by Lifespan Respite Care Children's Committee. For registration information, call 503-988-3646.
