Some 300 volunteers have signed up on a website to help launch a recall campaign against Mayor Sam Adams.
The group behind http://www.citizenrecall.org/ says it believes that "the city needs a new leader after Adams admission that he lied to the public about sexual relations with a teenager and orchestrated an elaborate cover-up to win the 2008 mayoral election."
"Mayor Adams has many great ideas for our city, yet lacks the public's trust and political capital to get them implemented," said spokesperson Jasun Wurster.
He said the Oregon Constitution prevents the group from collecting their first signature until July 1, 2009.
"Though it is an embarrassment having to call him mayor for the next five months, this waiting period allows us to organize a strong volunteer base that will ensure a successful recall," Wurster said in a statement.
He said the group hopes to have 2000 volunteers ready to collect 50,000 signatures during the 90 days mandated by state law for a recall campaign.
