More than 200 people raised their glasses to toast The Skanner’s 50th anniversary at the Oregon Convention Center on April 24.

In the half-century since The Skanner launched, it has chronicled a number of victories: To name a few, the state of Oregon sent its first Black representative to the U.S. Congress, a BIPOC caucus formed in the state legislature and Portland has seen a historic push to reclaim a historically Black neighborhood through the efforts of Albina Vision Trust, creating a model for other cities that have likewise decimated Black neighborhoods in service to flawed infrastructure projects. These gains would have seemed unfathomable when Oregon began its statehood with laws explicitly banning Black people from residing within its borders.

The invitation-only celebration brought together sponsors and community members who have supported The Skanner over the years.

Week after week, The Skanner has highlighted how power imbalances and institutional racism impact daily life within the Black community of one of the Whitest cities in America, documenting that very community’s deplacement. But The Skanner has also consistently celebrated Black history in its many forms and expressions throughout Portland by covering art, entrepreneurship, mentorship, collaboration and unity.

The Skanner Foundation has also awarded more than $1 million in scholarships since its inception in 1998.
