Anti-War March in Portland
More than 55 peace and social justice groups will join forces to demand an end to the war next weekend. "Stop the Wars and Occupations: Bring All the Troops Home Now" is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 at N.W. Park and Flanders, in the North Park Blocks.
Organizers say marchers will advocate for:
The United States to leave Iraq and Afghanistan;
Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territory;
More money domestically for health care;
A renewed commitment to the U.S. Constitution;
Guarantees that the U.S. will not attack on Iran;
The march will wind up at the World Trade Center, S.W. 1st Ave. and Salmon, where a "peace fair" will run through the afternoon. For more information visit  www.pjw.info

Devon Phillips Octet to Hold Gershwin Concert
The Devin Phillips Octet will stage a fund-raiser next Sunday for the Oregon Jazz Orchestra featuring the tunes of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," along with some added surprises.
Gershwin Goodness, which commemorates the 1935 debut of the popular musical, is a prelude to the Oregon Jazz Orchestra's first full-assembly performance slated for New Year's Eve.

Midwife Conference This Weekend
Midwife Shafia Monroe  is just one of 40 childbirth professionals who will be appearing at the Gentle Birth World Congress and Free Baby Expo at the Oregon Convention Center this weekend, Thursday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept 30 in the Oregon Convention Center.
Set up to help professionals give babies a gentler start in life and advocate for moms and babies, the congress will offer a wide range of training and further education to midwives, nurses, doulas and medical professionals.
Imam Mikal H. Shabazz, diversity officer for the City of Portland will lead an Ecumenical Invocation Friday morning, and talk show host Rikki Lake will premiere her new movie on Saturday, "The Business of Birth."
