The 35th annual Hood to Coast relay event concluded in Seaside, Oregon over this last weekend. The race, which is the largest relay event in the world, drew over 18,000 participants from over 30 countries. 1,050 teams began their journey from Timberline Lodge, Friday August 26.

In addition, over 400 teams also started from the Hawthorne Bridge to participate in the Portland to Coast walking relay.

The West Coast Steppers, who walked on behalf of The Skanner News finished their 130 mile journey from Portland to Seaside in 30 hours 44 minutes and seven seconds. The team chose to participate to raise awareness for health and wellness in the African American community.

There were numerous teams of veterans, such as Team Red, White, and Blue. There was also a team of blind and sighted athletes called Team With A Vision. Over 450 Cancer Survivors ran or walked in this year’s race, and 50 teams that have committed to raise over $10,000 per team for the Providence Cancer Center.

In 2015, participants raised over $565,000 for the Providence Cancer Center and are on track to raise more than $600,000 this year.

The actor and comedian Kevin Hart also ran in the Hood to Coast relay this weekend. Hart posted a 13-minute video to his Facebook page after he finished running in the 198 mile race. He spoke fondly of the people of Portland and how supportive they were to the runners. 

Hart trained for the event, but still found it to be a rigorous and challenging feat. Still, he said he plans on being back next year for the 36th annual Hood to Coast Relay.
