James Cooke

Portland resident the Rev. James E. Cooke Sr. died Jan. 21. He was 94.
Born on Feb. 13, 1911, in Beaver Dam, Ky., he was a coal miner, minister andsupervisorat Portland'sMemorial Coliseum. The Rev. Cooke had lived in the Portland area since 1962. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta (Ealy) Cooke, whom he married in 1937; by two sons, the Rev. James E. Cooke Jr. and Hillard Eugene Cooke; and two grandchildren, Shannon Cooke and Hillard Eugene Cooke Jr.


He is survived by daughters Norma Millner, Gloria Brown, Naomi Wright, Carrie Watson, Mary Hamilton, Mabel Davis and Essie Johnson; by sons Harold Cooke, Lester Cooke and Anthony Cooke; and by 44 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.


Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Maranatha Church, 4222 N.E. 12th Ave., followed by burial at Rose City Cemetery.
