Washington Celebrates Black Philanthropy Month

Today is the start of Black Philanthropy Month with the 2023 theme: “Love in Action.” This month-long celebration highlights the rich legacy of Black giving, with renewed emphasis upon increasing investment in Black communities.

All Washingtonians are invited to a virtual event with Black philanthropic leaders “Describing Love in Action,” on Aug. 9, 1-2:30 p.m. The conversation will explore questions like: What would Black-led philanthropy look like if it were driven by self-love? And, how can philanthropy expand love of Black humanity and equity?

Panelists include Olympia Edwards, CEO and founder of Project Girl Mentoring Program, and Jesse Hayes, founder and president of the Red Tailed Hawks Flying Club. The panel is moderated by Dr. Nekya Johnson, director of community impact and grantmaking of the Community Foundation of Snohomish County.

In Washington state, this is the third year formally recognizing Black Philanthropy Month. In 2021, the Black Future Co-op Fund worked with Gov. Jay Inslee to officially designate August as Black Philanthropy Month in Washington.
