Portland and Seattle will commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend with several events. The nation celebrates the civil rights leader’s birthday Monday, January 16 this year. Dr. King was killed in 1968, but he is remembered every year for the example he set in the struggle for equality. Below are some local events.

PORTLAND 

SUNDAY, JANUARY 15

ALBINA MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE ANNUAL MLK PROGRAM: Music poetry, and keynote by Dr. Biran I. Johnson, President of Werner Pacific University. Allen Temple CME Church, 4236 NE 8th Ave. 

MONDAY, JANUARY 16

mlkbreakfast2023 headshot introTHE SKANNER FOUNDATION’S 37TH ANNUAL MLK BREAKFAST: The Skanner Foundation again invites the community to share breakfast and celebrate the life, work, and vision of civil rights icon the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. We generally host more than a thousand attendees, plus business and elected leaders often including the governor and both state and U.S. senators and representatives. After two years of celebrating virtually, the community can now come together in person at the Holiday Inn Portland - Columbia Riverfront (formerly Red Lion Hotel) located at 909 N Hayden Island Dr.  This event will also be livestreamed on Facebook. iURBAN TEEN’S 13TH ANNUAL MLK BREAKFAST: In the midst of dangerous and divisive times, with our voting rights under attack, iUrban Teen invites students, staff and our dedicated community to gather together, to remember and “Believe” in the core values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Believe in integrity first, believe in service before self, believe in excellence in all we do and believe in a commitment to equality and social justice. PEACE BREAKFAST: The annual Peace Breakfast, held on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. while honoring members of the Oregon State community who carry his message and work forward in the present. The Peace Breakfast is free and open to Oregon State University community members and specially invited guests. Advanced registration is required. OSU, CH2M HILL Alumni Center, Corvallis 

9 AM – 1 PM 

STREAMTEAM MLK JR. DAY POTTING: Rather than just restoring a few hundred feet of salmon habitat, you will be contributing to the restoration of habitat across multiple watersheds in Clark County, in just one morning! Dr. King urged everyone to make this country a better place through community action. 8600 NE 117th Ave, Vancouver 

10 AM – 12:30 PM 

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY OF SERVICE: Volunteer with staff from the city of Vancouver to remove English ivy at Marine Park, 4501 S.E. Columbia Way, Vancouver. This ivy pull will be followed by a short nature walk through the riparian bottomland forests of the park, where participants will learn about native ecosystems and the role of non-native species in the urban landscape. Training, gloves, tools and a hot lunch will be provided. Registration is required at cityofvancouver.us/cmo/page/mlk-day-service-root-out. 

10 AM – 1 PM 

CHIMNEY PARK TREE PLANTING: Volunteer to help plant trees at Chimney Park! for the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service. Bring yourself, weather protection, and a water bottle! All tools and materials needed will be provided on-site. 9360 N Columbia Blvd. 

11 AM – 12 PM 

PEACE MARCH: An Oregon State University tradition, the Peace March follows the Breakfast and provides an opportunity to join in solidarity with community members and reflect on Dr. King’s legacy of creating transformative change through non-violence. Participants are led across the Corvallis campus on a 1-mile route, from the LaSells Stewart Center to conclude at the Memorial Union for speakers and community. This event is free and open to the public. Participants are invited to bring signs enforcing Dr. King's messages of non-violence. 1 - 4 PM 

KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE: Since 1976, Keep Alive The Dream has celebrated Oregon’s African-American community. This annual event honors pioneering activists, community leaders, artists, musicians, and youth whose efforts have left lasting impacts in Oregon’s African-American community. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5 or 5 cans of non-perishable food items. This event is family-friendly. Masking is required for entry. We invite you to join us! RECLAIM REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY: Join us for our 9th Annual March for Human Rights and Dignity. Turn up in solidarity to take part in a march organized in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Social justice champions Don't Shoot PDX will facilitate the peaceful demonstration for human rights and dignity. 700 North Rosa Parks Way 

SUNDAY, JANUARY 22

3-5 PM 

MLK Service Project: Making Sack Lunches for the Blanchet House: MLK Service Project: Join the Center for Social Change and the Office of Equity and Inclusion in making sack lunches for those in need, to be distributed by the Blanchet House. “The Blanchet House serves anyone who comes to our doors without judgment. We believe everyone deserves food, clothes, community, and hope.” All materials provided. Lewis & Clark College, 615 SPalatine Hill Road. 

SATURDAY, JANUARY 28

10 AM – 3:30 PM 

RADICAL AND REVOLUTIONARY HOPE: BLACK LIBERATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: This MLK Virtual Racial Justice Teach-in is presented by the Campus Collaborative -- a coalition that Portland State is a part of that seeks to create programming that centers the history and narratives of Portland’s Black community during, and around, Martin Luther King Day, the only national holiday committed to a Black leader. PSU, 1825 SW Broadway. 

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1

7 PM 

DR. MLK KEYNOTE ADDRESS: The 2023 keynote speaker is Jelani Cobb. The event is free and open to the public, and will be livestreamed. Jelani Cobb is a staff writer at The New Yorker, writing on race, history, justice, politics, and democracy, as well as Columbia University's Ira A. Lipman Professor of Journalism and next Dean of Columbia Journalism School. OSU, LaSells Stewart Center, Corvallis 

SEATTLE 

MONDAY, JANUARY 16

MLK DAY FAMILY TRAIL CLEANUP: Join Washington Trails Association for a day of service on Martin Luther King Jr Day. Open to kids 10+ and their families. Delridge Way SW & SW Graham St. 

10 AM – 4 PM 

40th ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY MARCH AND RALLY: Youth Event and Workshops are happening leading up to the event. Rally starts at 11:00 a.m. in Garfield High School gym, the march starts at 12:30 p.m., meet in the parking lot. 

10 AM – 5 PM 

WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY MUSEUM MLK DAY PROGRAM IN TACOMA: The History Museum is open with free admission for MLK Day. Theater performances at the History Museum will bring to life Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy. At 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, Tacoma Arts Live presents the original production 11 Days in the Life of Dr. King. This production chronicles Dr. King’s life and legacy through 11 vignettes featuring spoken word, dance, music, shadow play, and historic images. At 3:00 PM, Living Voices presents The Right to Dream: Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, a story that considers the struggle and sacrifice for Black civil rights through the eyes of a young African American activist growing up in Mississippi in the 1960s, and highlights the role of women activists.  Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific Ave, Tacoma

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY AT NAAM: NAAM is hosting a grand community reopening on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Enjoy music, movies, motivational social justice speakers, and activities for the entire family. Northwest African American Museum, 2300 S Massachusetts St.
