(Washington, D.C.) – In a late-night tweet, President Trump signaled that his administration may end the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) program enacted under President Obama.

AFFH was added to the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to fight historic patterns of segregation in housing. The following is a statement from Thomas Silverstein, counsel at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law:

“President Trump has a history of not paying workers on his construction projects, discriminating against African Americans in his housing projects, and ignoring lease requirements for his hotel in Washington, D.C. Based on history alone, he is the very last federal official who should advise communities on how to defeat housing discrimination in America. If he wants to do what’s best for the country and end housing discrimination, he will bolster AFFH, not attack it.”
