North Portland Library will present “Juneteenth: Words Along the Way” at the North Portland Library from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. June 17. The celebration will feature performances by PassinArt: A Theatre Company. This event is free and is first come, first served.

On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers brought Texans the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

Juneteenth, the observance of that date, has become a national celebration of freedom.  This celebration commemorates that date with words and music.

This event was made possible by The National Endowment for the Humanities Fund of The Library Foundation.
