Portland Tennis & Education (PT&E) will hold its first annual women’s sports celebration on National Girls and Women in Sports Day: Feb. 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at PT&E (7519 N. Burlington Avenue).

Nearly 30 female collegiate tennis players from around the Portland area will visit the after-school program to“engage and empower” the female scholar athletes. Each of the girls in PT&E will be paired with a collegiate player for an afternoon of activities and games.

The collegiate athletes invited to participate in the event include tennis players from the University of Portland, Portland State University, and Lewis & Clark College.

The “Engage and Empower” after-school event is one of more than 1,000 events taking place across the country for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Since being recognized by congress in 1987, the day has been devoted to commemorating the progress of girls and women in sports, and the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women.

The day is organized nationally by the NGWSD Coalition; to learn more, visit www.NGWSD.org
