Knott Street Boxing Club member Corey Hill, 17, won his second regional Golden Gloves championship, Feb. 7 at the Tacoma Dome.
Hill bested Jerrell Barbour of the Tacoma Boxing Club, Andre Reyes of Yakima PAL, and Andre Ramos of the Mesa Boxing Club for the honor.
His father, team coach Stanley Dunn, said Hill narrowly missed being named Golden Boy, a prestigious honor brought home to Knott Street only a few times in Golden Gloves history.
"Based on the quality of his fighting, his three straight wins, his form, his record since last year, he certainly deserved it," Dunn said.
The Knott Street Boxing Club, with almost two dozen members, is looking ahead to the Oregon State Golden Gloves Championship, Feb. 12-13 in Bend at the Midtown Concert and Event Hall. Local spectators are greatly encouraged to attend and cheer on Knott Street's fighters.
Expected on the bill from Knott Street are Hill, and last year's contenders Lorenzo Caldera, 14, and Darius Hill, 15. Caldera and Hill are past Junior Golden Gloves winners.
Dunn said the club is looking for more business sponsors to help them pay their $1,500 annual rent at the Dishman Center, where they train four times a week, Mondays through Thursdays, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Current sponsors include Realty Trust, Local 296 of the Laborers Union, and Auto Experts.
Find out how you can support the club, or sign up a youth for participation, by calling Hill at 503-957-6063, or drop in to the Dishman Center during club hours, at 77 NE Knott St.
