The Skanner Foundation will present the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, Jan. 21 in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel, 921 SW 6th Ave., in downtown Portland.  Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the event will run until 10:30 a.m.

The foundation has reserved 300 tickets for individuals and nonprofits. Call 503-285-5555 to secure your tickets.

Now in its 27th year, the breakfast offers academic scholarships to Portland-area students entering higher education.  

The keynote speaker at the breakfast will be Irma McClaurin PhD. McClaurin started her career as a poet before going on to become an anthropologist and author, writing about the civil rights movement and women in Belize as well as editing an anthology of feminist anthropology.  As an academic administrator, she co-founded and led the University of Minnesota's Urban Research and Outreach Center, and is a former  President of Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C.  McClaurin will speak about Dr. King's legacy in the digital age.
