The Bread and Roses Center will be sponsoring a showing of the film, "The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords" at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. The Bread and Roses center is located at 819 N. Killingsworth St. in Portland.

The film documents the role Black community newspapers have played in political struggles from the time of slavery to civil rights and beyond. Many Black papers were ahead of the time for other issues as well, employing women as photographers, reporters and editors when the industry was largely male-dominated.
After the screening of the film, there will be a post-video discussion on the role radical journalists and news media play in today's world.
The center is asking for an $8 donation ($4 for unemployed or striking workers) which includes a one-year subscription to the Freedom Socialist newspaper for you or a friend. Snacks will be available at 6 p.m. for a $5 donation..
