 The Skanner News Wins Four National Awards at NNPA's 2011 Summer Conference

The Skanner News brought home four national awards from the National Newspapers Publisher Association Foundation's Annual Merit Awards. The awards are part of the NNPA's annual summer conference, hosted this year by the storied Chicago Defender. The Skanner News won the Carl Murphy Community Service Award, for its overall content and, in particular for the Medal of Honor series, which told the story of Black WWI war hero Henry Lincoln Johnson … To read the whole story click here


'Long Lost Movie' Gives a New Perspective to 1970s Muhammad Ali
In 1966, Muhammad Ali refused to report to an Army induction center when he was drafted to fight in Vietnam, explaining: "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong. They ain't never called me [N-word]." At the time, he was undefeated and the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. However, Muhammad was soon arrested and convicted of draft evasion, and subsequently stripped of his title and boxing license.
