Army Sec. McHugh Will Review Sgt. Henry Lincoln Johnson's Medal of Honor Bid
Last weekend, Sen. Charles Schumer of New York sent a letter to Army Sec. John McHugh requesting America's highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for WWI hero Sgt. Henry Lincoln Johnson. It was 93 years to the day after Johnson fought off a band of 20 enemy soldiers in the dead of night. A member of the famed 369th, the Harlem Hellfighters, Johnson fought on after his rifle jammed and despite his wounds, using his bolo knife, rifle butt and bare hands to save a comrade and repel the attack … To read the whole story click here


County's Black Men Speak Out at County Forum
When it comes to budget decision making, there's an old saying: The squeaky wheel gets the grease. And last week, when Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith held a meeting directed at African American males from the ages of 12 to 25, there were a lot of squeaky wheels. PlayWrite's WORD VOICE. Showcases Theatre by At-Risk Youth
PlayWrite provides workshops in which theatre professionals and other artists coach at-risk youth to create and direct their own plays. The results are twofold: The young writers discover their voices and learn that art is a form of truth that can help them figure out how to live. And audiences get to see visceral, powerful theatre that offers the satisfaction of transformative experience. Twice a year recent plays and songs are chosen for performance at the winter or spring showcase. Help Kickstart Groundbreaking Artists with Disabilities Show
"A Somewhat Secret Place" is an admirable art project about disabilties. Some of the works will be by disabled artists and different works will be on the subject of disability. This 3-week show will open July 7th in Portland. But funding is still short for the compete program of fine arts, literature, dance, theater, video and film. Enough pledges must be gathered before June 20th using Kickstarter. Those who support will get tickets to special events, tax deductions and be proudly posted on the donors list … To read all about it click here
