Legislators talk gun control

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon Senate committee has approved a bill requiring background checks on most private gun sales.
The Senate Judiciary committee also approved an amendment Monday. It allows sellers who live more than 40 miles from the buyer to ship the gun to a local dealer. The purchaser would have to visit the dealer for the background check before picking up the firearm.

Opponents of the measure say background checks can be unreliable and inaccurate. They say the bill infringes on their 2nd Amendment rights. The two Republican lawmakers on the committee opposed the measure.

Supporters say it makes it harder for those who shouldn't have a gun to get their hands on one.

The proposal now heads to the Senate floor.
