Community charity activist David Yandell is helping to coordinate a special event at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
On Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m., Portland Police officers will serve ice cream at the annual Doernbecher Children's Hospital ice cream social, on the 9th floor courtyard.
The event gives officers a chance to visit children staying at the hospital and their families as well as provide a much-needed treat during these warm days to hospital staff members.
Over the last two decades, Yandell started up several charity drives as he worked as a Radio Cab driver. He started a campaign to collect and deliver Thanksgiving Day food for needy families. That campaign was turned into a nonprofit organization by Yandell's former employer, Radio Cab.
Yandell also helped deliver 1,000 backpacks full of school supplies to two elementary schools in Northeast Portland and also delivered hundreds of brand new bicycles to needy children in those neighborhoods.
