The Multnomah County Citizen Involvement committee is seeking nominations for the 12th annual Gladys McCoy Citizen Involvement Award.

The award is presented in recognition of outstanding lifetime volunteer service by an individual who is improving the countywide community in a manner exemplifying the life of Gladys McCoy, former chair of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners.

The deadline for nominations is April 8.

"We want to honor the county's outstanding citizen volunteer,"said Jessica Hamilton, committee chair. "Volunteers contribute thousands of dollars worth of services and enrich the community through their involvement and commitment to serving others."

Nominees should be citizen activist/volunteers who have made a substantial, positive change or contribution to the community, with an emphasis in civil rights, human rights,affirmative action,community and neighborhood improvement,local political parties, local government, environmental issues or education. One citizen is honored each year.

Past winners have been individuals working for the welfare of children, a strong advocate for the schools that educate homeless children and a volunteer who helped develop apprenticeship programs for North Portland and also established a meal program for the homeless.

Previous winners include Kathie Minden, William (Bill) Gordon, Edna Mae Pittman, Joanne Carlson, Michael Fahey Sr., Doshie Clark, Muriel Goldman, Susan Landauer, Bob Ueland, LeRoy Patton and Max Grishkevich.

The winner's name plaque will be displayed permanently in the county commissioners' office. The McCoy Award is made in conjunction with National Volunteer Recognition Week and highlights Multnomah County's annual volunteer award ceremony to be held on April 25.
