The Zeta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will celebrate 50 years of service to the Portland community on March 17 in the Acadian Ballroom, 1829 N.E. Alberta St.
The chapter was chartered in Portland on Nov. 25, 1955. Its charter members were Susie Anderson, LaVerne Bagley, Emma Chiles, Mary Henderson, Allie Jacobson, Mamie Jones, Martha Jordan, Annabelle Mohler, Mildred Reynolds, Alma Ruth Spencer, Roberta Vann and Althea Williams.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was established in 1908 at Howard University, and is the country's first Greek letter organization established by Black college women. The sorority was founded to enrich and encourage the intellectual pursuits of college women. The ideal of high ethical standards, scholastic achievement and dedication to "service to all mankind" is still the organization's focus.
The local chapter continues to provide various services throughout the community with emphasis on scholarship,economics, health and the arts.
