Medical Examiner Says Portland Shooting Victim Ervaeua Herring Was Pregnant

Three shootings over the weekend left a young mother dead and four people injured. The Medical examiner says the homicide victim Ervaeua Herring, 21, was in the early stages of pregnancy when she was killed by gunfire.

Police say they are unsure if two of the shootings were related but they suspect those involved have gang connections.

Mayor Hales released a statement condemning the violence and reminding the community that the Enough is Enough campaign against violence meets 6 p.m., Monday Aug. 18 at the Community Policing Center, 449 N.E. Emerson St. 

Portlander and NBA Houston Rockets forward Terrence Jones will donate money to the Herring family today at a special event with the family Monday.

The first shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday, Aug. 17 around 12:37 a.m., Police were called Southwest 3rd Avenue and Ash Street on the report of a shooting. They say two groups of men were fighting, when shots were fired leaving three injured. The victims are: 21-year-old Jaron Cuie, 37-year-old Damarvis Lee and 25-year-old Ricardo Savoy Hernandez.

The second shooting occurred at 5:00 a.m.,Aug. 17, at the Eastwood Village Apartments, located at 15139 Southeast Powell Boulevard. Witnesses told police several African American males with handguns fired shots at one of the apartments.

There is also a community awareness fundraiser for Ervauea Herring August 19^, 2014, 7pm-9:30pm at Billy Webb Elks Lodge, 6 N. Tillamook St. Portland. There will be spoken word, poetry and special guest speakers. Purpose of the event is to raise awareness about violence in Portland, find solutions to stop it and raise money for Ervauea’s family.

 The third shooting occurred at 10:41 p.m., Aug. 17, at Northgate Park, 6000 North Fessenden Street.  An unidentified man was found with a gunshot wound. The injury is not life-threatening. 

Police say they learned that a fight broke out inside the park involving several men.
It is not known if this is a gang-related incident. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Police Non-Emergency Line at (503) 823-3333.

Police say they will step up gang enforcement patrols for the next several days because of the shootings.

MONDAY, AUG. 18, 2014 – This weekend, Portland saw an intolerable outbreak of gun violence: a 12:37 a.m. Sunday shooting on Southeast Third Avenue; a 5 a.m. shooting on Powell Boulevard; a 10:41 p.m. shooting in Northgate Park.

 

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and to the neighbors of everyone affected by this violence in our city. This is the 87th gang-related violence call in our city this year – a dramatic increase from recent years.

 

The community is organizing an “Enough is Enough” meeting, 6 p.m., at the Community Policing Center, 449 N.E. Emerson St. This is a meeting organized by the community, for the community. The goal is to stop violence within our community; and to provide support for victims, their families, and Portlanders at large.

 

Participants will be asked for their guidance and advice within their areas of interest.
