Two free workshops for the inner artist are planned at In Other Words Bookstore through August.
A once-a-month children's poetry workshop will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, July 22 and Aug. 26, at the bookstore, 8b N.E. Killingsworth St. The workshops will be conducted after the children's reading hour.
Special guest Grace Hermes, 7, will read some of her poetry and discuss her process and approach to writing poetry.
Alissa Hartman will lead the workshop, investigating different styles of poetic expression. Bring paper, pencils, pens, crayons, a snack and creativity. Everyone is welcome, but the workshop is geared toward children ages 5 through 10.
Hartman also will lead drawing workshops that will show participants how to add detail, perspective and foreshortening techniques to their artwork and how to observe the lines, shapes, forms and textures of objects.
The workshop is a cumulative study, although attendance is not required at all four dates, which are July 22 and 29, and Aug. 5 and 12. The workshops run from 3 to 5 p.m.
Bring a variety of paper; graphite pencils and/or charcoal; erasers, both vinyl and kneadable; and a ruler or straight edge.
To register for the drawing class, call the bookstore at 503-232-6003. For more information, visit www.inotherwords.org.
