Summertime means baseball, ice cream, long lazy days — and giving back to the community.
The American Red Cross, the Portland Beavers, Jammin' 95.5 FM and Shari's Restaurants are collaborating to present the Celebrate Freedom Blood Drive from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at the Portland Donor Center, 3131 N. Vancouver Ave.
During summer, the blood supply often is just days ahead of patient need. The Red Cross is trying to collect as much blood as possible before the Independence Day holiday to help ensure a stable supply.
All participants will receive a free Shari's apple pie, Portland Beavers two-for-one discount coupons, Tillamook ice cream coupons and an event T-shirt, while supplies last.
The Rose City Clowns will provide entertainment at the blood drive, along with local artists Sharon Martini and Teena Wood, who will have prints available for sale.
Donors must meet minimum age requirements (16-year-olds in Oregon need parental consent; 16- and 17-year-olds in Washington need parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be generally healthy. They can donate whole blood every eight weeks and platelets every three days.
Call 503-284-4040 to schedule a donation appointment at the Celebrate Freedom Blood Drive.
