More than 19,000 people will participate in the 2021 Hood To Coast events held Friday through Saturday, August 27-28.

“The Providence Hood and Portland To Coast Relays draws participants and spectators from all 50 U.S. states and 43 countries. This popularity provides tremendous awareness and funding for the Providence Cancer Institute, as the beneficiary of choice. In just four event years, Providence Hood and Portland To Coast participants have raised over $4 million for world-class cancer research, treatment, and patient support services,” said Dr. Walter Urba, Providence Director, Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center, Earl A. Chiles Research Institute.

Eight crazy running relay reams embarked on a journey from Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean in 1982. Little did they know that in 2021 the Hood To Coast/Portland To Coast Relays would be the largest running and walking relay race in the world. This year is the 30th anniversary of the Walk event. In addition to the more than 19,000 participants, 3,600 volunteers will be working throughout the course. Starting at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood at 5,500 feet above sea level, over 13,000 runners will make the journey down the mountain to the city of Portland where they catch up to 5,400 Walkers and Challenge Runners. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful routes in the world, participants finish in Seaside, Ore. more than 24 hours after they began competing.
