"Today's news that anti-Muslim hate speech was found in an employee break room yesterday at the health department is another sad confirmation of the work that needs to be done to change the culture of hate, intolerance, and racism at Multnomah County. Muslims and people of all religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientations deserve a safe workplace.

"All of us, including myself, must do more to confront bias and practice inclusion.

"Just a few months ago we mourned the tragic murders of brave individuals who stood up to this same kind of hate on the max. No one should have to give their life to ride on public transportation, or be fearful to go to work because they practice a particular religion. We must work collectively to renew all employees trust.

"I again call on the Chair to put in place a community oversight committee to help guide the County in it’s external human resources review. Multnomah County must be a safe place not only for the people we serve, but for all of our employees as well.”
