Anticipating the new year, African Americans across L.A. say the Obama Age brings an optimism that many have never experienced before.
With unemployment rates skyrocketing, homes being lost in a spiraling housing market and daily cuts to social programs and services, it might seem there is much to fear at the beginning of 2009....

The theme of this year's march is Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign, which he launched in 1968 to address issues of economic justice and demand economic aid to the poorest communities of the United States. This MLK Day will also be on the eve of the inauguration of a new U.S. president, a fitting time to remember Dr. King's work for Economic Human Rights....

At this time of year, everyone starts searching for materials by and about Dr. Martin Luther King. Of course, there is much from which to choose. But, what many of your readers might not know is information on Dr. King is available in many formats: not just print but audio, video and digital.
All are available at your local library....

ASHLAND, Va. (AP) — At noon Monday, Carl Winfield stopped for a water break, still about 31 miles from Fredericksburg. Wearing hiking boots, a backpack and a heavy coat, the 60-year-old Petersburg man walked cheerfully — sometimes singing gospel hymns along U.S. 1 near Ashland.
Along the way, he said, he stopped to rest and pray at a church...

The Central Intelligence Agency last week commemorated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The keynote speaker at the CIA's annual King celebration, held Jan. 8, was U.S. Representative and legendary civil rights leader John Lewis, who delivered a moving address about Dr. King, a man he counted as a close friend and colleague. Lewis addressed a standing-room only crowd in the CIA Headquarters Auditorium....
