President Barack Obama signed a major healthcare reform law Tuesday, bringing to close months of contentious, often farcical, partisan bickering across the country.
The new bill will make it illegal for insurance companies to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions or minor paperwork errors; requires every American to buy health insurance, while providing tax breaks to middle class people; sets up health insurance buyer pools to depress the cost of insurance for those buying individually; and further regulates the health insurance market.
"Today, I'm signing this reform bill into law on behalf of my mother, who argued with insurance companies even as she battled cancer in her final days," said Obama at the signing ceremony.
Despite Republican predictions that the passage of the healthcare reform bill would spell doom for the Democrats politically, a Gallup/USA Today poll found 49 percent who thought the reform was a good idea, compared to 40 percent who thought it was bad. The Democratic National Committee also raised more than $1 million in donations Tuesday.
