BP's "Top Kill" effort to stop oil from leaking into the ocean has failed. The company's chief operating officer Doug Suttles said despite pumping 30,000 barrels of heavy drilling "mud" into the broken pipe a mile below the surface, the pressure of the escaping oil was too great and the leak could not be stopped. Suttles said the next attempt will be to put a cap over the leak that will capture "most" but not all of the oil. That will take at least four days.
Meanwhile Louisiana fishing communities fear their way of life may have disappeared for the long term.
