What I Brought Home From My Spanish Vacation

meddietberniewithfriends_300I hope you enjoyed looking at my vacation photos and finding out more about the Mediterranean lifestyle. The wonderful friends I made, the sights I saw and the things I learned on my trip will stay with me for life.

Here are just a few of the things I brought back with me from Andalucia.

  • Extra virgin olive oil is your best choice for cooking and for salad dressings, and it makes food taste great.
  • Diversity goes for food too: Tomatoes, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Color on your plate equals healthy food for your body.
  • Meat in moderation: Think of meat as a side dish– good for taste and variety but just a part of the meal.
  • Fish is more than a breaded fried fillet. I found all kinds of new fish plates to enjoy.
  • Serve and eat small plates: Spanish tapas deliver variety.
  • Sit down to eat: no self-respecting Spaniard will ever rush his food or eat on the run. Meals are an event. Enjoy them.
  • Drink goes with food: In Spain, wine, beer, or cocktails are part of your meal. At minimum, try a few olives or pistachios.
  • Take a siesta: President Lyndon Johnston took a daily nap. And so do many Mediterraneans.
  • Walk around the block: Get out of your chair and walk around the neighborhood. In Spain people get out on the street every day to see and be seen.
  • You’re never too old to ride a motorbike. Mediterranean seniors are as likely to be on bikes and scooters than in cars. It’s all in the attitude.

Wishing all The Skanner News readers long and healthy lives.
