The Skanner News Publisher Bernie Foster and Executive Editor Bobbie Dore Foster have been named by the Meridian United Church of Christ as the recipients of their 2012 Celebrating Diversity Award.

“We’re honored to receive this award because diversity is part of our mission,” said Bobbie Foster. “UCC has a long history of seeking justice.”

In 1971, the UCC’s Rev. Ben Chavis, field officer in the church’s Commission for Racial Justice, was a member of the Wilmington 10 who spent prison time after a school desegregation effort in North Carolina.

Beginning in 2000, Meridian UCC, also known as Frog Pond Church, has annually honored “an Oregonian whose life and work embodies the Biblical vision of a just and inclusive society.”

Past recipients include Margaret Carter, Bonnie Tinker, Tony Hopson, Angel Lopez, and more.

The church has honored Oregon leaders in the fields of LGBT rights, legal access, mental illness, children’s rights, humanitarian relief, healthcare for Native Americans, human rights and social, racial and economic justice.

The Fosters will deliver the church’s Celebrating Diversity Sunday message this weekend on the challenges in moving towards a just and inclusive society.
