Police Lift Blockades as Rape Protests Ease in New Delhi

Authorities lifted the lockout of New Delhi's key government district as massive anti-rape protests that hit the area over the weekend eased Wednesday.Traffic movement appeared near normal at Raisina Hills -- home to the seat of Indian power -- as police removed security barriers from most roads.
But security restrictions remained tight.
Riot police stood guard in large numbers as reinforcement vans and water-cannon trucks stood by.

A police officer, who suffered injuries during the violent weekend protests, died Tuesday morning at a city hospital. Constable Subhash Chand, 46, had been on ventilator support at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.
The victim remained critical in a city hospital. Doctors told reporters Tuesday her condition was a "shade better" than the previous day, but said there was no major improvement in her health.
New Delhi's metro rail also re-opened its services around central parts of the city. Services were shut down after protests swelled Saturday and Sunday.
