January 13, 2011The Skanner News in 2011 plans to launch a wide array of new media ventures, and that’s why we are excited to announce our keynote speaker at the 25th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast is Ellyn Angelotti of the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The event is Monday, Jan. 17, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The program includes live gospel music performances, scholarship awards, and a presentation on The Skanner News’ new media initiatives for community involvement in 2011. The Skanner News Video: Yusuf Word told us he appreciated his Skanner Foundation Scholarship and already is finding ways to give back.
“It is an honor for us to have a guest from the Poynter Institute to speak at our breakfast, because this organization has had an important impact on our operations at The Skanner,” said Publisher Bernie Foster. “Our news editor and our executive editor have both attended training seminars there and brought back important ideas that have changed what we do and how we do it right here in Portland.
“The changes in news media are affecting the lives of everyone in our communities, and we are proud to bring an expert to our breakfast to show us the ways we can benefit from the trends and use them to improve our lives,” Foster said.
Ellyn is truly a trailblazer in the interactive media field, and has spent her professional life innovating news tools for storytelling and maximizing public input in media coverage. She also specializes in the ethics of new media and how digital news coverage is changing our community landscapes.
Her dynamic speaking style and common-sense take the increasing usefulness of simple media tools – like cellphones -- to keep up with breaking news has caught the attention of journalism institutions around the world.
But more importantly, Ellyn’s close examination of how these same tools are quickly becoming the glue that holds together communities and social groups places her on the sharpest edge of fast-paced journalism trends today.
An award-winning multimedia journalist who has helped shape current trends in news coverage, Ellyn teaches and consults with newsrooms and media development organizations including National Public Radio, The Associated Press, the National Association of Black Journalists, Online News Association, Journalism That Matters, and many more.
Since joining the faculty of the journalism think tank the Poynter Institute three years ago, Ellyn has mastered and shared insights on multimedia development, social networking and how news organizations connect with users through interactive media tools.
Last year Ellyn travelled to the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism in South Africa, where she taught and researched new approaches to “mobile storytelling” – use of Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook and other social media on cellphones and other mobile computer devices, to build community, share information and tell compelling stories.
