Family and friends of Andre Dupree Payton pleaded for brotherly love, community and an end to the gang violence that ended the short life of their loved one, in a shooting Sept. 26. But at 2:10 pm, just after the powerfully emotional service had ended, police were called out to a drive-by shooting on NE Mallory and Going Street.  The Skanner News Video: Drive-By Shooting
Police Lt. Kelli Sheffer told reporters that the victim, a 19-year-old Black man, was shot twice, once in each leg, and taken to hospital for treatment, but he will live. The gang violence response team was on the scene, and police spokeswoman Lt. Kelli Shaeffer said police, outreach workers, and parole workers are stepping up their efforts to work with youth and prevent further bloodshed.
An African American man on the scene was overheard telling police the victim had just come from Payton's funeral. Police later released a statement saying the car used in the shooting had been recovered. It is believed to have been stolen at knife point outside a strip club a week ago.
